New York experimental producer/composer Bryce Hackford's work covers a broad spectrum ranging from dance, ambient, pop and new music to interdisciplinary sound art projects. For ICM012, he focuses on the subtle undercurrent that interconnects his varied work. Diegetic Music captures a series of rehearsals between Hackford and dancer Brittany Bailey at their Downtown Manhattan studio.
︎ ARTIST STATEMENT
At birth, the whole world is full of sound. We learn to regard most of this sound as noise and important information recognizable. In film, diegetic sound can be considered as all of the sound that happens within the frame of the story. The only music that features in movies that qualifies are the songs the characters hear, the ones taking place within the narrative of the story. The flattened sonic space of these recordings renders the distant car horn and the intimate piano chord equivalent. A gentle and ephemeral space encouraging contemplation of relationships and acceptance.
Gorgeous piano music interspersed with real world sounds. The environment comes in contact with an instrument. Organically reactive.
